Blanche DuBois Character Cards
System Design

The goal of this project was to create a set of cards for Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire based on literary and visual analogy. The project used a surrealist game to dive deeper into the character and extract her personality. Using the vernacular language of streetcar tickets, I created these cards to fully showcase Blanche and her complicated legacy.

Process

These cards are printed on the Risograph printer, a digital duplicator machine that uses soybean ink and prints one color at a time. I was originally drawn to the Riso to replicate the look of a vintage ticket, but it also ended up being a great tool for overlapping elements of the collage aspect. This project taught me about the power of historical inspiration and cultural references. Utilizing the aesthetics of streetcar tickets created a strong design and message because it connected back to my character. The Riso helped bring the design to life and create cards that are distinctly Blanche.

All the cards were printed on the risograph, so each color had to be sepearted onto one plate. My original plan was to use mint and sunflower, however after initial color tests I discovered the burgundy provided better contrast.
