Pluto
Pattern Design

The Pluto Pattern is a repeat pattern based on an article about the anniversary of Pluto losing its planet status. I was drawn to this story because it speaks to our humanity, and how much we care about our solar system. We are far away from Pluto, and no matter what we think it will continue to orbit and exist. But it is very human for everyone, not just scientists, to care.

Process

After initial research, I decided to start this project with hand-making to capture the humanity of Pluto’s story, and how invested the general population is in Pluto’s planet status. I created a collage that included Pluto, Prague, the Roman God, and a hand with a card to show the voting process. I used the collage to create 2 color Risograph prints. After scanning in all my prints, I laid out the design in Photoshop and put it in repeat. This project taught me about the value of play and unexpected results. When I created the Risograph prints, I simply used as many colors as I could without planning any overlaps or specific combinations. The results were some imperfect prints, but each one has personality and works well in the pattern.
